Afternoon into Evening with Dad

A brass ashtray
full of pistachio shells
and a documentary
the paul the peter and the mary

A purple candle lit
(along with the locusts’ songs)
for a brother that died
on that couch at dusk

And somehow things
slowed down enough for you to get sick
and for all of the things
your grace and your mercy to stick
onto all of us

A purple candle you lit
for your brother that died on your couch at dusk
heart, lungs liver failed
mind, body soul given up to gin

Things slowed
and you got sick
But now
you’ve got to admit
you’re getting better
and wearing brown tortoise shell glasses
in the evening light
in a house with no more smoke
and a body that houses
a soul that keeps
us all glued
