Some months ago, Dr. Ira Byock spoke with Krista Tippett on her radio program “On Being” about his career and his book, “Dying Well: Peace and Possibilities At The End Of Life”. Dr. Byock has practiced emergency medicine, family medicine and is the former president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care. In his book, Dr. Byock gently unfolds the scrolls of what it might look like to die well– two ideas that simultaneously seem terrifying and comforting. Care for the dying is something that has been on my mind for awhile so Dr. Byock’s book and interview especially drew me in. I now have the book and am making my way through it. The quote is from the opening page.
