Tomato Sauce II: The Making Of

Ground beef laid out
opened in paper splayed, unfolded
like a present
Oregano tipped over
smells like buttery spice and dirt from somewhere sunny across the world
and of another place in time
Smash the garlic
then slice like good fellas, making them razor-thin
so they will melt into the sauce
Chop the onions; throw their paper skins away
Scoot them off the cutting board then watch them
down into the trash
as light as the fall leaves falling on the wind outside
And as they land, dry, with brown edges curling up
It occurs to me that I am as alone
and as free
as I have ever been
